Fire Classes Explained

Fire classification determines which extinguishing agent will interrupt the fire triangle — heat, fuel, and oxygen — without creating new hazards. Using water on an electrical fire causes shock risk; using ABC powder near sensitive electronics causes corrosion and cleanup costs. Correct classification is the foundation of extinguisher selection.

Indian and international standards align on primary classes, though industrial facilities in Dahej, Ankleshwar, and Kutch may encounter specialised hazards requiring expert assessment beyond standard commercial guidance.

Available in capacities from 1 kg to 50 kg (including trolley-mounted units for industrial yards), ABC units offer broad coverage at moderate cost. The trade-off is residue: powder corrodes electronics, contaminates food production areas, and requires thorough cleanup after discharge. Avoid ABC in server rooms, pharmaceutical clean areas, commercial kitchens, and precision manufacturing zones.

CO2 Extinguishers

Carbon dioxide extinguishers displace oxygen around the fire and provide cooling through rapid gas expansion. They leave no residue — ideal for electrical panels, generator rooms, server closets, laboratory equipment, and flammable liquid fires where cleanup would damage assets.

CO2 is stored under high pressure and discharges with extreme cold at the horn nozzle. Operators must not hold the horn on some models during discharge to avoid freeze burns. Use caution in confined spaces: CO2 displaces breathable oxygen and can asphyxiate occupants if discharged in small enclosed rooms without ventilation.

Gujarat fire inspectors expect CO2 extinguishers at main electrical incomers, lift machine rooms, and diesel generator enclosures. Pair with clear signage identifying the unit as CO2 — staff trained on ABC extinguishers may default to the wrong type during emergencies without proper labelling and training.

Clean Agent Extinguishers

Clean agent portable extinguishers use HFC-227ea (FM-200), FE-36, or similar halogenated agents that extinguish fires without water damage or powder residue. They suit server rooms, archives, medical diagnostic equipment areas, and telecommunications facilities where even CO2's thermal shock or oxygen displacement is a concern.

Portable clean agent units complement — but do not replace — fixed gas flooding systems in data centres. For small server closets or UPS rooms in Bhuj or Ahmedabad commercial buildings, a 2–4 kg clean agent extinguisher provides first-response capability until the fixed suppression system activates.

Environmental regulations are shifting agent preferences toward lower-GWP alternatives. When specifying new equipment, confirm agent availability for refilling with your service provider — discontinued agents create long-term maintenance problems.

Water and Foam Extinguishers

Water extinguishers (gas cartridge or stored pressure types) are effective exclusively on Class A fires — wood, paper, and textile combustion. Never use water on electrical fires, flammable liquids, or cooking oil fires. Water conducts electricity and spreads flammable liquid fires across floors.

Mechanical foam extinguishers (AFFF — aqueous film-forming foam) suit Class A and Class B fires by forming a suppressing film over liquid surfaces. They appear in loading docks, paint stores, and workshops handling solvents. Alcohol-resistant foam (AR-AFFF) variants are required where polar solvents like ethanol or acetone are stored — common in pharmaceutical plants across Gujarat.

Water mist extinguishers — a newer category — use fine droplets safe for some Class C applications in specific certified models. Verify IS certification and manufacturer listing before deploying in electrical areas; not all water mist units are approved for energised equipment.

Wet Chemical (Class K) Extinguishers

Wet chemical extinguishers are designed specifically for Class K cooking fires involving vegetable oils and animal fats that burn at temperatures exceeding 300°C. Standard ABC powder may appear to knock down a kitchen fire but can fail to prevent re-ignition as hot oil remains above its auto-ignition temperature.

Wet chemical agents saponify cooking oils — creating a soap-like layer that seals the surface and prevents re-flash. Gujarat hotels, institutional cafeterias in schools, and food processing plant kitchens require Class K portable units even when fixed hood suppression systems are installed. The portable unit covers fires that migrate outside the hood capture zone.

Mount wet chemical extinguishers within the travel distance requirements of IS 2190 from cooking appliances, but not so close that a hood fire blocks access. Train kitchen staff on the difference between hood suppression system activation and portable extinguisher use.

Placement Rules (IS 2190)

IS 2190:2010 specifies selection, installation, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. The fundamental placement rule: no point on any floor should be more than 15 metres walking distance from an extinguisher, measured along the actual path of travel — not straight-line distance through walls.

Mount extinguishers at 1.0–1.5 metres height to the handle, with the unit visible and unobstructed. Install near exits, stairwell landings, kitchens, electrical rooms, loading docks, and along primary escape routes. Heavy units above 4 kg may be floor-mounted in approved stands where wall mounting is impractical.

Hazard-specific placement overrides general rules: CO2 at electrical panels, wet chemical in kitchens, foam at flammable liquid storage. Gujarat fire NOC inspections verify both presence and correct type for each zone — a warehouse with only ABC units near diesel generator enclosures will fail inspection.

Maintenance and Servicing Requirements

Monthly visual inspections by building staff are mandatory: check pressure gauge (green zone for stored pressure types), verify pin and tamper seal integrity, confirm mounting bracket security, and ensure access is unobstructed. Log inspections in the fire register — fire officers request these records during NOC renewal.

Annual professional maintenance by a licensed fire equipment service provider includes internal examination, agent weight verification, hose and horn condition check, and service tag renewal. Extinguishers discharged partially or fully must be refilled immediately. Hydrostatic testing at 5- or 10-year intervals (depending on cylinder type and agent) is required per IS 2190.
