Any fire protection pipe passing through a watertight concrete structure needs a penetration detail that prevents water tracking along the pipe exterior. Puddle flanges are the standard solution in Indian fire protection installations for below-grade and water-adjacent penetrations.

Technical Specifications

Puddle flanges consist of a steel flange collar welded to the pipe at the penetration point, with the collar embedded in concrete during pour. The flange creates a water stop that prevents moisture tracking along the pipe-concrete interface.

Standard materials include mild steel (IS 2062) with anti-corrosion coating for above-grade applications, and hot-dip galvanised or epoxy-coated steel for below-grade and coastal installations. Flange diameter must exceed pipe OD by sufficient margin to create an effective water stop — typically 50–100 mm wider than the pipe outer diameter depending on wall thickness.

Available sizes match common fire protection pipe diameters: 80 NB, 100 NB, 150 NB, 200 NB, 250 NB, and 300 NB. Custom sizes available for non-standard pipe schedules used in industrial installations.

Selection and Installation Guidance

Puddle flange diameter must match pipe OD with appropriate flange collar width for the wall thickness being penetrated. The flange is welded to the pipe before concrete pour — retrofitting after construction requires destructive civil work and should be avoided.

Coordinate puddle flange installation with civil contractor during formwork stage. Mark penetration locations on formwork, install pipe with welded flange at correct elevation, and ensure concrete fully encases the flange collar without voids. Grout sealing at the pipe-concrete interface on both sides of the wall provides additional protection.
